Music for the Occasion

I'm Lenard Avarian (Len for short) and I'm everyone's little ten year old brother. This piece is entitled "Neptune- the Mystic" and is based of the planet I live on. The composer, Gustav Holst, wrote a piece for each of the eight planets. He died four years after the discovery of Pluto. He was asked to do a piece for Pluto, but he did not want to add anything on to his finished work, "The Planets". Guess some old guys really are psychic, huh.

Gems and Bling

Good day, Earthlings! My name is Luis Avarian, and I’m Lillian’s twin brother. I’m here to show you something actually interesting, unlike my sisters which have probably bored you half to death. Without further ado, let’s talk about diamonds!

Due to the high pressures on Neptune, and the carbon in the ocean, there are diamond icebergs under the clouds of Neptune. The carbon in the water solidifies, and floats. You can walk on diamonds! You can do a Mexican Hat dance on diamonds! You can swim through… wait a minute… it’s solid… you can’t swim through diamonds! Anyway, you should all come and check out the awesome diamond icebergs!

That’s not all. Here on Neptune, it also rains diamonds! The high amount of methane in the atmosphere can condense into diamond. This causes diamonds to rain all the way down to the planet’s core! If you love jewels, then come o Neptune and enjoy the sights. And, if you want a souvenir, you should go to the icebergs. I have sombreros!

The Moons of the Ocean God

Salutations! My name is Lillian Avarain, and I’m 16. If you couldn’t tell, I’m Lila’s older sister. I’m here to tell you about Neptune’s moons. Neptune has 13 moons, and they’re all named after aquatic creatures in Greek mythology. Here’s a little bit about my three favorites.

Sao is an irregular satellite of Neptune, which means it doesn’t orbit in a perfect ellipse or circle. Sao orbits Neptune at a distance of about 22.4 million km and is about 44km in diameter. Sao is named after one of the Nereids. Nereids were sea sprites that helped sailors during storms. Sao was especially associated with sailing and is referred to as “The Rescuer” or “safety”

Neso is the outermost irregular natural satellite of Neptune. Neso orbits Neptune at a distance of more than 48 million km, making it the most distant known moon of any planet. Neso is about 60 km in diameter, and is named after another Nereid.

Triton is the largest moon of Neptune, and it has a diameter of 2,700 kilometers. Triton’s orbital period is about -5 Earth days. The number is negative because Triton is the only moon in the solar system that circles Neptune in the opposite direction the planet rotates. Triton’s core is rock and metal, and it is covered in an icy mantle and frozen nitrogen. The surface is relatively flat, yet there are a few impact craters. It was discovered only seventeen days after the discovery of Neptune. It is the largest of all of Neptune’s moons. If you added all of the mass of the other moons, they would only make up one third of the entire mass of the Neptunian system. Triton is named after Triton, the messenger of the sea. He was the son of Neptune and Amphitrite.

I hope you all decide to come visit these three awesome moons!

Welcome to Neptune!

Hello, Internet! My name is Lila Avarain, and I’m a thirteen-year-old girl who lives on the best planet on the universe, Neptune. I’m going to tell you all about the wonders of the eighth planet from the Sun!

Neptune is the fourth largest planet in the solar system, and it orbits 4,504,000 km from that bright old Star, the Sun! If you decided to sail around Neptune’s diameter, it would be a 49,532 km journey! The mass of this big blue sea is 1.0247 multiplied by ten to the twenty-sixth. If you wrote that, it would be 102,470,000,000,000,000,000,000,000! You can’t even say that! You wouldn’t want to celebrate your birthday n Neptune, as one Neptunian year is equal to 165 Earth years! However, our days are only 16 hours and 7 minutes.

Galle and D’Arrest first observed Neptune on the same night, September 23, 1846! Thusly, an international dispute occurred over who got to name the planet. After a long argument involving many different names, they decided on Neptune, so it would have a Greek/Roman (If you ask me, they’re both the same.) like the other planets. Even as a new planet, Neptune was popular!

Neptune is composed of helium, methane, various ices and rocks, and 15% hydrogen. Neptune is a vivid blue because the methane absorbs all the red light in the atmosphere and there are chromophores that make the clouds blue. Neptune has the fastest winds in the entire solar system, reaching up to 2,00km an hour Neptune has no surface, only an ammonia, water, and methane sea underneath the clouds.

Neptune is one of only two planets in our solar system that cannot be seen with the naked eye. The spacecraft Voyager 2 visited it way back in 1989. After many missions in 2057, a colony was placed on Neptune, and we have been thriving! We’re only different than normal humans because our natural hair colors are different shades of blue, and we have larger lungs. I hope that all of you out there are having fun on Earth, and if you come to Neptune, visit me!
